How to Auto Code Synched Transcripts in NVivo 11

Weloty’s NVivo Transcription Service offers 3 types of transcripts that you can import into NVivo. Synched NVivo transcripts are great for research projects where data analysis of the videos/audio may be as much as the verbal output which is transcribed.

For those of you who plan to use NVivo to analyze their interviews and or focus groups, this video is a step by step guide on how Auto Code Synched Transcripts in NVivo 11. If you’d like us to transcribe your interviews and or focus group discussions using the NVivo synched format, which does eliminates an enormous amount of work for you, please get in touch.

Transcript

In the previous tutorial, I showed you how to import a synchronized transcript into NVivo 11. In this video, I’m going to show you how to segment the transcript using the auto code feature in NVivo 11.

Now, I wish to code everything that the interviewee said into a node. Why? Well, so that I can easily explore what they said, make comparisons, add case classifications, run matrix queries and so forth. Let’s begin.

Auto Code Synched Transcripts

We have the video and the synchronized transcript that we import in the previous video into NVivo 11. To auto code the transcript is really easy. All you need to do is go to analyze, click on auto code. We are going to auto code using source styles and structure. Next. NVivo automatically selects the appropriate column, in this case it’s the identifier column. Click on next.

We want to code into a new node. And we are going to call the node, inkling, the name of the company. And finish.

Now if we go into our nodes. We have created a new node called inkling, and in it we have everything that Matt said, and everything that Mike said. Let me show you how to easily and quickly create a case node from the child node of Matt.

If I right click on it, create a node, and I can go to cases. Now I want to create a new case called Matt. And I’m going to add a classification that I have already created, and this person is male, they are less than 30 years old. Go to my cases and as you can see, we have created a case node called Matt.

Word Frequency Query

Now there are many things that you can do here. My favorite is the word frequency query. This for me is a quick way to see what are the main themes, concepts, categories, in a transcript. And select items. We want run it on the case that we have, and only the case.

As you can see if I run this through the transcript, then I’m going to get what the interviewer also said. And that is going to skew my data. That is one of the advantages of having a case node. Word cloud, and there we go.

I can instantly see that people and company, are two very important categories in the interview. So I’d like to write a memo and explore that later on.

That’s it for this short series. If you need assistance with NVivo transcription of your research interviews or focus group discussion, please visit our website via the link below. Happy researching.
